Old books – Chuck or Cherish

When my Mum passed away I inherited many of her old books. Well…  – when I say I inherited them I actually rescued them from being thrown out as it seemed such a shame to throw out such lovely old books!!

But now they fill up two shelves of my bookshelf and I wonder if I should get rid of them. Some of them I cant as they have my Mums name in them as they were her schoolbooks, or a notation to her as they were given as a gift. But most of them are just old (probably boring) books. I doubt any of them are valuable first editions so not worth anything except sentimentally to me.

What do you think I should do?

Chuck or Cherish

When tidying up our houses – and especially when you are trying to de-clutter we are always faced with decisions…… mainly do I keep this or throw it away?

Some of these decisions are pretty easy but some are a lot harder. We cant always keep everything we want to – but we dont want to throw something out and always regret it either!

I am going to start a new line of conversations – and I invite you to participate…..

I invite you to place a photo or a description of some object that you are struggling to make a decision about on my blog. Write the reasons why you want to keep it and why you should get rid of it. Sometimes just writing down these reasons is enough to help you make a decision, sometimes you might need input from others to help you make your decision.

Once you have made the decision you can let us know what you decided and why you decided to make that decision. It may be that someone might come up with a great way to reuse your object as well and you can tell us about that!

I hope this will help us make those difficult decisions a bit easier to make….

Procrastination…I will put up a definition later….

Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the “last minute” before the deadline.

With the modern emphasis on YOLO (you only live once) it seems that we use that as a ready reason why we don’t do unpleasant or boring things….

I seem to have been a procrastinator all my life – probably starting when I was a student. Not being organised could be a reason – but I can be extremely organised when under pressure! I do lots of work for Clubs and manage to keep a lot of balls in the air…so lack of organisation cant be the only reason… I think it is because I am an overthinker. In an effort to decrease my anxiety levels I tend to think and plan about what I need to do – and then not leave myself enough time to actually follow thru on my plans. Afterall when you are planning something in your head (even if you have planned for every possible complication) it still seems to be quicker or easier to do in your head than in real life. Even when you think you have allowed plenty of time you never do!

Having searched the internet for definitions and research on procrastination I find there is plenty of info out there…

Academics tell us that procrastination can be caused by a fear of success or failure….. not sure how that works. These same academics also say that it is more prevalent in students than the general population… they clearly have not surveyed many of my families and friends….

There is lots of interesting research about the reason why procrastinate, how we procrastinate and how to stop you procrastinating. I guess I will read it all later….

I guess the most important thing to realise is that most of us do procrastinate about something in our lives. And that we are not lazy.

So that makes me feel better… better get back to tidying up the desk… but I will just catch up on Facebook first….

Why is it so?

I don’t consider myself a real hoarder with a house full of clutter… I watch the Buried Alive programs and feel quite good about the amount of stuff I have… mine is all useful? Right?

I just find it hard to throw out perfectly good things – like shoe boxes… they are always such a useful size and made out of good strong cardboard…. great for storing stuff in…  But even I had to admit that 20 or so shoe boxes saved over many years was not practical considering I probably only find uses for one or two over a year! I regretfully threw them all in the bin…well most of them…there was one particularly strong box I am sure I can find a use for sometime….

It made me wonder about why we keep this stuff…. and why do some people like me keep it for far longer than they need to – and others have no qualms about tossing it out immediately? I look towards my parents…. both hard working farming folk. They don’t seem to possess that gene of “keeping  just in case”! And they lived thru the depression and rationing during the war. They displayed practical hoarding… like darning the socks until they were being darned on top of darns, or cutting bed sheets down the middle (which had become thinner due to years of use) and turning the ends into the middle so they could be used for several more years… They didnt keep useless things just in case they were needed….

I look to my children… the oldest is a hoarder like me… tends to have a lot of clutter and keeps stuff (mainly at my house! lol) in case she can use it in the future. My son is far more practical… and hates clutter. I told him I had kept a box of precious things from his school days (you know – his first finger painting, clay hand models…). I was shocked when he said why would he want those and he would just chuck them out!So I can see that box will have to stay here as I am sure one day he will be glad I kept them…. wont he??

So do we tend to keep more stuff because we have more to keep? It certainly isnt because I went thru hard times like my parents. I admire people that are organised and have a place for everything and everything in a place. I wish I had a tidy house and could lay my hands on something I am looking for straight away…. but I think at this stage in my life I wont change…all I can do is try and recognise that I need to declutter and be more diligent about not keeping stuff I dont need or wont use….

Spectacles Recycling

I went thru the house and found 10 pairs of glasses from my hubby and I. All expensive prescription glasses….

Did a bit of research and found this address that you can post them to…

Personal Eyes Donate Glasses, Reply Paid 301, Parramatta. NSW 2124

Just pop them in a padded bag and post and they are sent overseas for people that require glasses and cant afford to get them…. not sure anyone has eyes as bad as mine but you never know!!

And what are these for?

Decided to tackle the table in my sept room that I dumped all my bits and bobs from my august room!! Lol covered with computer cables etc so got sidetracked sorting thru 2 boxes of computer and tv cables, charges etc. decided to throw most of them out as I have no idea what they are for!! Lol so the table isn’t mich tidier yet but I have got rid of two boxes of junk. This is the box of stuff going in the bin!!

bite 4

One Bite at a Time – supporting each other to tidiness and order….. That was my original inspiration for a blog…… But then I thought that could get pretty boring to write and read – especially considering my ability to procrastinate. So after writing a few posts and considering the direction my posts were going I decided that this affirmation – Take One Bite at a Time – could apply equally to my life as well as the clutter in my home! Being a woman of a certain age, my desire to declutter my home could also be a sign of a desire to declutter and simplify my life – possibly as you start to recognise that you are mortal and that there is less life left to be lived! So this blog will be about decluttering our houses but it will also be about decluttering and simplifying our lives. There are so many of us that are hoarders and live amongst our mess and disorder. We crave a tidy house where we can find everything when we want!! But there are also many others who want to make sense out of our changing lives. We are here to support each other to get our stuff sorted!!
